Gold is always a good investment. It never loses value!
Real estate is good too if you get in the right neighborhood.

Money market bank accounts have the highest paying interest. You use it like a checking account. You'll have to check with your bank to see if there are any fees. Mine says the high balances have no fees. (steady balance of 2500.00)
If you find your bank only allows 3 or something like that, transactions then use both the checking account and money market accout! Write out of the money market only 3 times a month.

Ways to save money on electric: (I do these things and believe me, your electric bill goes way down!)

Turn off all electronics. All those glowing red and green button lights may not seem like much, but they can add up to 50-70 $ a year! Put stereos, tvs and computers on a power strip so you can flip it off easily.

Turn the fridge down a bit. If it's too cold, then it's using more electricity.

Probably the biggest savings will come with the hot water heater. If you have an electric hot water heater, turn it OFF! Yep, flip the breaker switch off during the day. Get home from work and turn it on. Then, turn it off before bed. Wake up, turn it on and start the cycle over again. It only takes 20 minutes to heat the water, and it doesn't cost any more to turn it off and on like that. This might save you 20-50 $ a month on your bill!

Do not mess with the thermostat once you set it. Turning it off durning the day makes it work harder to cool or heat when you do turn it back on because everything in the house including walls and furniture are now hot/cold. You'll find it's running for hours if you turn it off then back on when you get home.

Food:
If you have a discount can good store like ALDI's you will save 50 cents on every can you buy! They are not store brand products, but when you're trying to save $ you can't beat their prices.

Buy a food sealer and cook up enough food on the weekends to take for lunch during the week. Spending money on lunch daily will eat through your paycheck very fast.

Make your own coffee and don't spend money on coffee outside of the home. save 1.49 a day! (or more)
same for sodas. Buy them at the grocery store and store them at work. You will save 3 times as much as you paid for them at the grocery store.

Coupons. They can help, but be careful you're not buying things just because there's a coupon.

Water:
You can't ration water, but you can conserve it.
Turn off the water while you shave, brush your teeth and such. As much as 10 gallons of water go down the drain!

Take shorter showers. There's really no reason to stand in a shower till the hot water is gone. Soap up, rinse off and get out.

Collect rain water for watering plants using old buckets!

Those are just a few little tips. I hope it helps!

Money Market Savings Account has a high interest rate and is liquid. Fees depend on the bank.
Putting your money in a mutual fund that pays interest is also a good idea.
